Voices from the Capitol- Gov. McAuliffe’s FY18 Budget

Posted:  -  By: Emily Griffey

Faced with a $1.5 million shortfall, we have been bracing ourselves for cuts to our investments in kids and our progress. Fortunately, Governor McAuliffe’s budget spares children and families from feeling the brunt of these cuts. All of our progress to provide more support for youth aging out of foster care, resources for children experiencing behavioral health issues, and improvements in early childhood education remain in place in the FY18 budget. However, the House and Senate money committees will have a chance to revise the Governor’s budget plans once the General Assembly begins on January 11th.

We want to thank Governor McAuliffe for recognizing investments in children and families as essential to promote economic stability. In addition to preserving the progress we have made, Governor McAuliffe’s budget protects funding for education, and provides additional resources for the mental health system and the Children’s Services Act.

We also want to thank the members of the General Assembly for their continued investments in children. You can help us thank the Governor and GA by sharing your story or speaking up for children at one of the regional budget hearings on Wednesday, January 4th.
